Maskwacis, Alberta, is home to four bands: Samson, Ermineskin, Louis Bull, and Montana. MESC oversees ten schools dedicated to serving Maskwacis students by upholding Nehiyaw language, culture, and traditions.

Set in a picturesque area of Maskwacis, Nipisihkopahk Elementary School integrates the Cree language and land-based teachings as foundational aspects of its programming. These values remain a high priority across all MESC schools.

Position Overview

The Principal will be a dynamic instructional leader with exceptional interpersonal skills and a commitment to academic excellence. They will foster a collaborative learning environment where students and staff thrive. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing visionary leadership while promoting a welcoming, caring, and safe school environment.
  • Leading and supporting staff in delivering quality instruction to ensure academic success for all students.
  • Leading foundational knowledge of Nehiyawewin, Nehiyaw culture and traditions
  • Building positive relationships with parents, guardians, community members, and external agencies.
  • Ensuring adherence to MESC policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to self-growth, reflection, and ongoing professional development.

As a leader in the organization, the Principal will model the intent of the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of Îyinîw Mâmitonehicikan, Nehiyaw Pimâtisiwin, Nehiyawewin, and Wâhkôhtowin. This is evident by:

  • Ensuring that decisions are made to the ultimate benefit of Maskwacis students;
  • Assisting the Superintendent and the board to ensure that all students benefit from their treaty right to quality education;
  • Respecting and promoting the Cree language, spirituality, and traditions within the Education Authority; and
  • Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all matters relating to education in the Maskwacis Schools: consensus building, creating dialogue with stakeholders, and empowering leadership in the system.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience (Grades 3-6 preferred).
  • At least 2 years of administrative or leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and respect for Nehiyawewin (Cree language), culture, and traditions.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or Leadership.
  • Experience in Indigenous education or working in Indigenous communities.
  • Familiarity with the Maskwacis Declaration on Education.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong instructional leadership with a background in inclusive education.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and team management skills.
  • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Effective decision-making, problem-solving, and time management.
  • Culturally responsive leadership with political sensitivity.
  • Competency in using educational software and technology.
