Additional Information:
The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment within the assigned MESC facilities. This includes performing custodial duties, minor maintenance, and snow removal to ensure the facilities are in a sanitary and functional condition. The custodian ensures that offices, restrooms, and other common areas are thoroughly cleaned and ready for the next day’s use. This position requires attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
The Custodian is responsible to the Custodian Supervisor.
The Custodian duties include but are not limited to:
- Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Perform routine cleaning duties and minor maintenance as per the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly schedule.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors in designated areas (e.g., hallways, classrooms, offices).
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, toilets, mirrors, and replenishing supplies (e.g., soap, paper towels, toilet paper).
- Empty trash bins and replace liners, ensuring proper disposal of waste and recyclables.
- Dust and wipe down furniture, fixtures, and surfaces (e.g., desks, tables, chairs).
- Clean windows, doors, and glass surfaces as needed.
- Disinfect high-touch areas (e.g., doorknobs, light switches, handrails).
- Maintaining first 30 feet from entrances (e.g.: snow/ice removal, sweeping)
- Report all power interruptions, plumbing issues, BMS (Building Management System) issues and security concerns to the custodian supervisor in a timely manner
- Supply Management:
- Ensure all cleaning supplies are stored properly and securely.
- Ensure custodial rooms are neat, clean, and organized appropriately.
- Monitoring and managing cleaning supplies, equipment, and materials ensuring stock levels are maintained.
- Placing orders for supplies when necessary
- Report any maintenance or repair needs (e.g., broken fixtures, damaged furniture) to the appropriate personnel.
- Equipment Operation:
- Use and maintain cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuums, floor buffers, mops etc.) properly and report any equipment malfunctions
- Use of man lift; once received appropriate training and certification
- Follow safety protocols when handling cleaning chemicals and materials
- Special Projects:
- Assist with events as needed (i.e: garbage, floor coverings, tables & chairs etc.)
- Perform deep cleaning tasks during school breaks or downtime (i.e.: carpet cleaning, waxing floors, or washing walls etc).
- Safety Compliance:
- Participate in all required health and safety training
- Comply with the health and safety program and practices and report violations
- Administrative Duties:
- Check emails daily
- Enter leave requests into Atrieve
- Participate in staff meetings, staff development and team building activities
- Comply with Company Policies and Procedures
Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma, CAEC (GED), or equivalent experience preferred
- Building service worker certificate, an asset
- A minimum of one (1) year of previous custodial work experience is preferred.
- First Aid certification is considered an asset
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to prioritize work assignments
- Ability to communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing
- Ability to perform minor repairs and equipment maintenance
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Strong attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills required
- Ability to deal with students and staff sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Strong working knowledge of e-mail.
Working Conditions
- Hazards associated with custodial work
- Regular work hours of Monday to Friday 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- Variation to regular work schedules for special events, summer hours, school breaks and emergencies
- Must be physically fit to perform the functions of this position
- Safety equipment (PPE) will be required (e.g., steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses or goggles)
- Overtime as required and approved by supervisor
- Work both indoors and outdoors
- Exposure to biohazards
- Travel to various school sites required
- Assignments are usually routine and repetitive
