Additional Information:
The primary function of the Educational Assistant (with fluency in ASL) is to provide sign language interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, classmates and educational staff.

The Education Assistant is responsible to the Principal.
The Education Assistant will have specific responsibilities for:
- Supporting the student who is deaf or hard of hearing by facilitating communication between the student and those who do not use sign language and vice versa.
- Participating in educational team meetings.
- Interpreting for co-curricular activities, parent meetings, and other occasions that may arise.
- Preparing for classroom interpreting.
- Continuing professional development and skill advancement.
- Working with a student or group of students to deliver activities that reinforce and advance the educational program.
- Some students may have special medical concerns and/or learning needs and may require health-related care throughout the day.
- Working directly with students as directed by the Teacher.
- Preparing required educational materials.
- Observing student behaviour and providing information to the Teacher.
- Reviewing and preparing all documents, and reports as required by the Teacher.
- Assisting the Teacher in determining the course of action for students,
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
- Meeting regularly with the Teacher to discuss student progress and learning needs.
- Assisting in preparing materials, creating displays, and undertaking other supportive activities.
- Working within established structures, including classroom management structures, behavioural rules, and IPP and Behaviour Plan expectations.
- Clarifying elements of the lesson for students who are having trouble.
- Supervising reinforcement activities.
- Implementing specific techniques, strategies, and language as directed by the Teacher.
- Collecting data for use in student evaluation.
- Marking objective tests for the Teacher to review.
- Reporting to Teachers on students’ strengths, achievements and needs.
- Reporting to Teachers on observed student behaviours and outcomes.
- May be required to supervise students
Qualifications
- High school diploma required.
- ECD Level 1 and/or one (1) to two (2) years of experience working with children
- fluent in ASL
- Understand the language implications in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
- Knowledgeable of the basic aspects of student’s physical, educational, social and emotional development
- Knowledgeable of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreting as part of an educational team
- Experience working or interacting with Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons, especially children
- Knowledgeable of Deaf culture and community resources
