Compensation Rate:

$42,762-$73,500 - Depending on qualifications

Hours Per Week:

40 hours per week plus overtime as required. 

Additional Information:

The Maintenance Labourer will be primarily responsible for general grounds maintenance, including landscaping, clearing snow and debris, and maintaining exterior walkways. This position will ensure that buildings are kept in a clean and orderly condition, and will perform heavy cleaning duties as needed. Additional duties may include tending to the furnace and boiler, performing routine maintenance activities, and notifying management of the need for repairs.

The Maintenance Labourer is responsible to the  Director of Facilities.

The Maintenance Labourer will have specific responsibilities for

  1. Grounds keeping
    1. Maintain outside grounds by removing snow, ice, and debris, spray and remove weeds, sweep and clean gutters, cut grass and water, maintain a sprinkling system, and perform other activities as required.
    2. Perform gardening and horticultural duties such as planting, weeding, watering, and pruning in order to ensure exterior spaces are neat and well-kept.
    3. Lock or unlock doors to ensure appropriate protection of and access to facilities.
    4. Ability to operate powered equipment such as zero-turn mowers, grass trimming equipment, etc..
    5. Ability to operate outdoor equipment i.e. ride-on lawn mowers, weed whackers, backpack blowers etc..
  2. Maintenance
    1. Perform general cleanup of all MESC facilities.  
    2. Monitor the need for equipment maintenance and repair.
    3. Maintain fire alarms and extinguishers.
    4. Maintain and have a working knowledge of environmental safeguards and alarm systems.
    5. Contact the appropriate maintenance service shop for major repairs.
    6. Perform minor repairs on building components such as windows, doors, switches, desks, tables, plugs, equipment, appliances, sinks, toilets, and blinds.
  3. General cleaning
    1. Clean up vandalism and repair within skill level.
    2. Clean light fixtures and change incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
    3. Keeping all MESC equipment clean and maintained on a regular basis.
  4. Additional Responsibilities  
    1. Turn lights on or off as appropriate.
    2. Maintain proper inventory of materials and supplies.
    3. Determine needed supplies and equipment.
    4. Patrol grounds to identify cleaning, maintenance, and facility security needs.
    5. Moving School Furniture from location to location.
    6. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of custodial, janitorial, or grounds keeping experience required.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in the operation and maintenance of buildings.
  • Completion of a craft apprenticeship preferred.
  • Building trades certificate or equivalent desirable.
  • Must possess and maintain, at minimum, a valid class 5 driver's license. 
  • Must qualify to be insured by MESC’s insurance provider without the Commission being charged an additional premium or surcharge.

Working Conditions

  • Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Safety equipment will be required (e.g., steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles)
  • Overtime as required.
  • Hazards associated with the trade.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to work flexible hours. ie: weekend work, with time in lieu during the week.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • First Aid skills and/or certificates are considered assets.
